Capshaw Connection Newsletter

March 2007

We would like to take up donations for the Jere Whitson teachers' school accounts. Teachers spend so much of their own money; we would like for them to be able to purchase the things they need.

Principally Speaking . . .
Did you know that if children read too little at a young age, they will likely become nonreaders? Reading instruction helps children learn to love reading by making sure they have interesting books available at school and at home. Capshaw's library continues to grow, students have access to all Advanced Placement (AR) tests available, and classrooms also have personal libraries for your children to use. It is encouraging to see children walking through the hall with a book or stopping to show me what they are reading when they arrive at school. Readers are leaders, and that is why reading is a top priority at Capshaw.

Top 5 Ways to Make the Car Line Go Faster
5. As the car line comes to a stop, let your child walk up the sidewalk to enter the school. The exercise will be good for them!
4. If you are at the beginning of the car line, pull all the way up to the cafeteria doors before you stop.
3. When the car line is still moving, do not stop to let your child out in front of the door.
2. When picking up your child, be sure to have a large sign in the window of your car with your child's name and grade on it.
1. Be patient; about 90 percent of our children are car riders.

Teachers are on duty with car riders until 3:30 so you may want to pick up a little later and miss the first round of traffic. Our main concern is the safety of your child.

Jump Rope For Heart
Hooray! This was our best year ever for Jump Rope for Heart. We had 120 3rd and 4th grade students who had a great time jumping rope at Capshaw and TTU. They raised $6,332.53 for the American Heart Association. Capshaw's top money raiser was Rachel Davis. AHA uses the money for research to prevent heart disease and stroke. Thanks to all who participated and contributed to this good cause.

Library News
The library is now open from 7:30 - 7:55 in the mornings, and from 2:50 - 3:15 in the afternoons. This will allow your child time to return a book or take an Accelerated Reader (AR) test. We need to strictly abide by these times since LEAPS begins in the library at 3:15 p.m. The computer lab is not available.
